Fighting Eel Kahala
Custom Furniture - Balsam
Fighting Eel has been the queen of the Hawaii retail scene for over 20 years. When the owner came to us to help reimagine what the retail experience would feel like, we jumped at the opportunity to deliver something special. We worked closely with the owner to develop custom cabinetry and display pieces that balanced simplicity and elegance. Material and finish selection were carefully considered throughout the project to keep a consistent look across every element. The end result is a refined retail space built for a local Kama'aina.

Our client wanted this space to feel like a sanctuary. Both for them as homeowners, but also for guests that would also be using this space. The vanity was the starting point. We built it in rift white oak, finished with a custom stain that brings out the wood's natural warmth and grain. The stone vessel sinks and open lower shelf keep things grounded and tactile. Integrated pulls kept the face clean and minimalistic.

A project like this starts long before anything is built. We worked tirelessly with the, architect, interior designer, and general contractor, to achieve the homeowner's design goals for the project. The clients chose quarter sawn white oak specifically for the character in the grain. With so many engineered wood products on the market, they wanted to make sure these pieces felt like real hardwood. Sourcing and matching that grain across an entire home is its own discipline. Every panel, every door, every ceiling plank had to read as part of the same material story, from the kitchen and island to the walk-in pantry, home office, bathroom vanities, built-ins, and custom faux beams. What sets this kind of work apart is the fit. Each piece was designed and built for its exact opening, its specific wall, its particular space. Nothing was adapted or adjusted after the fact. That level of precision is what gives the home its architectural quality, the sense that the wood didn't just arrive and get installed, but that it was always meant to be there.

A project like this doesn't come together by accident. When this client came to us to design and build the millwork for their entire home, we knew exactly what it would take. A whole-home millwork package, covering the kitchen/kitchen island, pantry, entertainment center, bathroom vanity, and a custom beam, requires a level of coordination that goes well beyond the shop. Every piece has to feel like it belongs to the same family, and when you're working across that many areas, that starts with the material itself. We hand-selected the veneers on this project which meant ordering large quantities and sifting through the color, grain, and character to carry seamlessly from one space to the next. The cabinet design was a collaboration. The client was drawn to a thin shaker profile, and together we landed on something intentional: the stiles and rails finished slightly darker than the center panel. It's a subtle detail that adds depth and dimension without announcing itself
